Successful Caregiving in Congregate Settings: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (SCCS1-ENG)

Description

Serving in the role of someone who provides care shows that you care about people. And with the landscape of California changing, more older adults, from many different backgrounds, are living more independently but will still require a level of care. This course is intended to highlight the diverse communities of people that you care for, and provide an understanding of:

- The definition of DEI terminology

- The impact social identities can have on service and care

- Implicit bias, how to recognize it and manage our own

- The importance of showing empathy in service and care, and

- The need to learn cultural differences, which will help increase our awareness of the cultural experiences of those that we care for.

It is our goal to help you feel valued in your role and confident that you have the skills to positively impact the people you serve. Understanding that we are all different and similar in many ways will help us reduce the ways that we “pre-judge” others who are different than us. Learning the value of those that hold social identities different than our own and working to intentionally understand the cultural differences and life experiences we all have, that is the essence of diversity, equity and inclusion.
